Why a paraphrase is sometimes the best translation

Does the word “paraphrase” sound like fingernails on a chalk board to you?

If you cringe when you think about the Bible being rendered into a thought-for-thought paraphrase, then I want to toss out some thoughts about why a paraphrase is sometimes the best translation.

First, let me say that we love word-for-word accurate translations. We need them. Unless you’re fluent with Greek and Hebrew, it’s the only way to build rock-solid reliable theology. ESV, NASB, KJV or whatever…

Love does.

Have you ever heard of Bob Goff? I met him today and he's really quite extraordinary. If you met Bob, you would like him instantly because he's just that kind of man. He's also the founder of Restore International, a non-profit fighting injustices committed against children in Uganda and India. He's an attorney in D.C. and the Honorary Counsel for the Republic of Uganda to the U.S. Bob was the first attorney in Uganda to try and convict a witch doctor of atrocities committed against children…

Three things about God that make me glad

Three things about God make me glad. Here they are …

I’m glad God gets angry

Stop and think about it. If God didn’t get angry, heaven would be a miserable place. There would be rape, torture, human trafficking, child molestation, theft, oppression, corruption and abuse of every kind. But God looks at these things that destroy human beings, our families and our communities and He feels an emotion. That emotion is anger. Without God’s wrath, there is no salvation. Without God’s…

Rich with meaning, bold with purpose

So, I made it to Portland. I'm writing to you from Stumptown Coffee where I just paid a ridiculous amount of money for a cup of coffee that was grown in Guatamala and hand picked and roasted by farmers who were just here yesterday. It's honestly one of the sweetest cups of coffee I've ever had and I drink a lot of coffee. It is rich with meaning, warm with expression and it traveled to be here with me. One of God's perfect gifts when done right. Of course, it took time and intention. I know… Continue

The Storyline Conference

In a few weeks, I'll be traveling to Portland to begin a journey that could change everything - or nothing. My trip to Portland actually started three years ago when I picked up a copy of the book, Blue Like Jazz at Half Price Books.  I think I paid $3.98 for it.  I laughed so hard I cried as I turned the pages.  I loved how he loved Jesus.  I loved his sense of humor.  I loved his words. I loved that he told the truth.  I was searching for a Jesus like this - one who loved without shame -…

Blue Like Jazz vs. the Christian Movie Establishment

This appeared in my in box this morning from Blue Like Jazz producer and director, Steve Taylor.  I thought it was absolutely worth sharing.  I will be at the premiere for the movie on April 13th.  I'm also on the Street Team for the movie.  I hope you'll also be supporting the film by bringing your friends and telling others about it.
